We are excited to introduce a new initiative aimed at enhancing the experience of our younger members, specifically the under 13 and under 14 nippers. We are launching the "Surf Cadets" program, which will enable these enthusiastic young individuals to join patrols, gaining invaluable experience prior to completing their SRC.
The primary goal of this initiative is to provide our cadets with practical patrolling experience while fostering a sense of belonging within the club. We believe that early engagement in patrol activities will not only enhance their skills but also promote long-term retention in the club. During their time on patrol, surf cadets will have the opportunity to engage with and learn from patrolling members. We encourage all patrolling members to take on a mentoring role, guiding the cadets through various activities that may include:- Pre-Patrol and Post-Patrol Equipment Checks- Setting Up the Beach Trailer and Flags- Radio Practice and Checks- Practice on Rescue Boards and with Rescue Tubes- Signals Practice- Assisting Award Members in Educating Swimmers about Swimming Between the Flags To ensure safety and visibility, surf cadets will wear a pink nippers rashie over a long-sleeve rashie, a hat for sun protection and their nippers cap at all times whist in the water. It is crucial that we remind the cadets to apply sunscreen and stay hydrated throughout their patrol duties.
The ball is already rolling!! A big shoutout to Ruben, who joined Patrol 13 on recently! He was welcomed with open arms and jumped right in, helping with pre-patrol equipment checks, setting up the flags, conducting radio checks, and practicing with the rescue board and tube.
